This month, we are shining the spotlight on Dr. Anita Burgun, one of PROMOT’s key partners and a driving force behind our work.

Dr. Burgun is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Université Paris Cité, AP-HP, and the Imagine Institute, where she leads a research group within the Clinical Bioinformatics Lab. Her team’s work focuses on medical informatics, ontologies, data interoperability, and the use of artificial intelligences (AI) approaches in rare disease. Her work centers on developing innovative methods to ensure that complex health data can be meaningfully connected and used across institutions and research networks—a cornerstone for rare disease research. In rare disease research, information often comes from many different sources—hospitals, labs, research studies, and patient registries. Dr. Burgun and her team focus on creating ways to connect all this information so that researchers can work together more effectively and develop novel rare disease models.

Within the PROMOT project, Dr. Burgun and her team contribute their extensive knowledge in ontologies and semantic integration of biomedical data. They are helping to ensure that patient information, research outputs, and clinical knowledge are organized in a way that is both structured and interoperable. This means that information collected in one country or hospital can be understood and used by teams in another. This work is vital for enabling data sharing between partners, improving the consistency of information, and ultimately supporting new discoveries in rare disease research. Thanks to their expertise, PROMOT partners will be able to share knowledge more easily, compare results, and speed up discoveries that can make a real difference for people living with rare diseases.
Dr. Burgun’s impact goes beyond the technical aspects. By guiding PROMOT in adopting standardized approaches to data management, she and her team are laying the foundation for a sustainable and scalable research ecosystem. By helping us “speak the same language” when it comes to data, her team is making collaboration smoother and more impactful.
We are proud to work alongside Dr. Burgun and her team, whose dedication and expertise are helping PROMOT move closer to its mission: improving research and care for rare disease patients and their families.
